New Nationwide Report Reveals That More than One in Every 10 Adults Experienced Serious Psychological Distress in the Past Year

Report shows that less than half of those with serious psychological distress received mental health services.
An estimated 24.3 million adults in the U.S. aged 18 or older experienced suffered serious psychological distress in the past year – and only 44.6 percent of them received any kind of mental health services according to a new report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

New Report on Substance Use Among Adolescents

Adolescents who use drugs at an earlier age are more likely to develop substance dependence or abuse. Preventing or delaying substance use among this population is of utmost importance and has been an ongoing goal of the Federal Government’s Healthy People initiative ( http://www.healthypeople.gov/). This issue of The NSDUH Report examines trends in substance use, dependence or abuse, and treatment among adolescents (i.e., youths aged 12 to 17). Data from the 2002 through 2007 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health (NSDUHs) are utilized.

The 2006 DAWN report, developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), provides the latest estimates on how substance use affects this critical part of the Nation’s healthcare system.

New Report Indicates that Integrating Mental Health and Physical Health Care Services can Benefit Patients with Depression

A new report released by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) of the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) found evidence that people treated for depression in primary care clinics that provide a coordinated set of mental and physical health do better and have fewer symptoms than patients who are treated at sites that just provide health services.

Final Federal Workplace Drug Testing Guidelines Allow Broader Use of Urine Specimen Testing

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) today published a Final Notice of Revisions to its Mandatory Guidelines for Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs (Guidelines). The Guidelines establish the scientific and technical guidelines for the Federal workplace drug testing programs and establish standards for certification of laboratories engaged in drug testing for Federal agencies by addressing the collection and testing of urine specimens, the requirements for the certification of Instrumented Initial Test Facilities (IITFs), and the role of and standards for collectors and Medical Review Officers (MROs).

This is a 12-member panel of experts that meets regularly to advise the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary, SAMHSA’s Administrator, and CSAT’s Director on a wide range of public health matters related to prevention, treatment, and recovery support services.
